Tribute to Gordon Willis: Prince of DarknessI didn't know who he was till I was much older (late 30's) but I was mesmerized by his cinematography watching his films during the 70's and 80's. Gordon Willis was called The Prince of Darkness for his use of deep, rich shadows that not only accented highlights but often obscured them. It was easy to know a Gordon Willis film (even the obscure ones) within a few minutes of watching a film. To this day, I often question myself: Am I using too much light in this photograph, especially when working with studio lights, and am I obscuring my vision of this image by adding too much light and not enough darkness?
